#gamergate 2

A friend of mine linked this article which seems typical of the media coverage of #gamergate, lazy, one-sided and polemical. 1) It gets the narrative wrong. 4Chan's /v/ as an entity got into this when they and Wizardchan were accused of raiding Zoë Quinn. There is no real evidence for this specific accusation despite these being public boards and in my opinion this is not their modus operandi. The feeling about feminism on 4chan is generally hostile but also uninterested and there is no explanation as to why they would care about Zoë Quinn, (/b/ is not you personal army). 4chan reacted strongly to the accusation whereas Wizardchan wanted no publicity (it is board for people with social anxiety). What 4channers did apart from the twitter hashtags was fund a charity for female game developers that had been attacked by Zoë Quinn and some acquaintances of hers prior to the start of the drama.

2) It also get's the conflict wrong. There have been large amounts of harassment against women, but this time the anger is directed against so-called Social Justice Warriors and not women as such. There are more women than men who fit this profile and women probably have it worst (apart from Phil Fish). It has been morphing into more of a culture war through the hostily expressed by both sides. Further, 4chan is late comer and a minor part of this story. There are two reasons this blew up into a big thing: an underlying dislike of game journalism as being too opinionated and low quality and controlled by an in-group of aloof journalists with similar political ideals and the Streisand effect. What made people angry was possible favoritism by gaming journalists (constrast how Zoë Quinn and Max Tempkin were treated). What really made it blow up was when most big gaming journalist sites made a coordinated counter attack that declared the gamer dead, which seemed to justify the accusations leveled against gaming journalists.

From my point of view the problems of games journalism are the same as those of journalism in general where newspapers and news sites are being out competed by amateurs on the internet and react by lowering their standards. They declare that gamers are dead but it is probably them who are dying. While I agree with a lot of the criticism of journalism, I find it ridiculous to see a conspiracy or scandal here as implied by the name #gamergate. Game journalists are not that important. I feel for those who have been harassed but using hyperboles such as: gamers as a group are misogynistic or that this is campaign to silence women only increases the resentment.

I care about this issue because I am a feminist and a gamer (and also someone who visits 4chan). I do neither wish to be lumped together Zoë Quinn nor those who harass her. There are people on both sides who would spin this into a case of we and them, of misogynistic gamers and social justice warriors, and so far they have been quite successful. Journalists have a major responsibility here.

We can build a broad consensus around a number of issues. 1) Harassment is bad, do not do it 2) People do bad things, more so on the internet, that does not mean that they represent all women, all gamers, all feminists et cetera. You are not even sure if they are who they claim to be. 3) Gaming journalists should avoid feeding the stereotype of gamers as male, teenagers who are afraid of/hate women. It increases  resentment and scares away women. If they want to regain the respect of their audience, more transparency and higher quality articles goes a long way. 4) Try to be inclusive towards people. If you do not want the thing you like to be popular, you are elitist. 5) If you are offended by a game or a news article, switch to another game or to another news site, there are plenty to choose from nowadays. 6) That being said, the gaming industry would be well served by more interesting female characters and more diversity in general. Indie games and crowdfunding are promising ways to get that diversity. The changing demographic of gamers will also effect the larger studios, the stereotype gamer is not so stereotypical after all.

Or we can just sit back and watch the world burn...
